Take the audience along, let them have a voice.
For almost 15 years, I’ve daily chatted, laughed, cried, and gotten pissed off with our audience on the digital and social side of the journalism business. Why? It’s personal. You get to know a lot about your audience. You live where they live. You get annoyed with the same bull hockey. And you laugh at the same irony.
You just happen to have keys to a huge platform to share and shape the conversation I have always wanted to be an advocate for the audience to be first and top of mind. We need these personalized relationships to restore faith in our work. We need to fearlessly seek to bring as many diverse voices into our storytelling as humanly as possible.
Give them the mic
You can call it a gimmick. But I realized something after interviewing many people over the years. You need something beyond your charm to break the ice. Give them something to affix their attention slightly to take the edge off their anxiety. Fun or interesting isn’t a bad thing, either. Even when talking about tough things. For me, it’s always been this silver mic. Give them something cool to speak into and they’ll think, even for a moment, they are special and have a voice that needs to be heard.
